THALASSA HOLDINGS provided Marine & Commercial Diving Services to one of the most active Emergency Response Companies in Worldwide Marine Casualties. These services included Marine Salvage, Towage, and Wreck Removal Operations, consistently prioritizing the protection of the marine environment from pollution, as well as property and life at sea.
This particular engagement involved a difficult Offshore Marine Salvage Operation in open sea, compounded by a very strong current. A 65,000-ton laden Bulk Carrier had suffered significant damages in its Fore Peak Tank (FPT) after grounding in shallow waters.
Salvage Tugs, equipped with the necessary personnel and equipment, were swiftly mobilized for emergency response. The Salvage Team successfully refloated the vessel and removed it from the reef by carefully unloading a specific quantity of cargo to another vessel. Following this, the vessel was towed to a safe anchoring place for essential underwater repairs.
The on-site works and repairs performed included:
- Survey of the grounded area: This involved a detailed survey of the bottom area of the fore peak tank, as well as the collision bulkhead and stiffeners, accessed from inside the fore peak tank through manholes.
- Patching of openings: Openings were effectively patched using wet welding.
- Crack arrest: This crucial step involved drilling to arrest cracks and the cutting of hanging plates.
All works were completed to the full satisfaction of both the Client and the RINA Class Surveyor.
